The four corner clearing
A four corner working with perimeter, orientation, and pressure arriving from several directions to clear a stale atmosphere and mark a deliberate fresh beginning.
Meaning and practice
Clearing is most convincing when the room changes with the ritual. Fresh air, an emptied surface, washed fabric, or a revised routine gives the symbolic beginning a physical place to continue. Here, the distinctive work belongs to four matching buttons or tokens. Four tokens turn an abstract boundary into a shape with distinct points of strain. Its meaning becomes useful only when the question is answered directly: “Which corner is least defended, and which is guarded far beyond need?”
Assign home, work, body, and attention to the corners; reinforce only the weakest. That demand is what distinguishes this four corner rite from another clearing: its conclusion depends on the specific problem carried by four matching buttons or tokens, not on a generic promise of change.
Sources behind this working
The Book of Talismans, Amulets and Zodiacal Gems
William Thomas and Kate Pavitt · 1922
The source records historical uses and meanings of objects in the same family as four matching buttons or tokens. Four tokens turn an abstract boundary into a shape with distinct points of strain. This working applies that documented motif to clear a stale atmosphere and mark a deliberate fresh beginning; its wording and sequence are original to Okkult.
What you’ll need
- Four matching buttons or tokens
- A square sheet of paper
- A ruler
- A pencil
- A spray bottle of plain water
- A dry towel
The ritual
- Draw a square at the center of the paper and label its four sides. Count the tokens before placing them so none is left unaccounted for. Arrange the workspace specifically for this clearing, removing anything that will not be used.
- Record what you are clearing and what you want the space to hold instead on the tag, card, label, or paper provided. Open a window if weather and security permit, then ask: “Which corner is least defended, and which is guarded far beyond need?”
- Place one token at each corner of the written intention. Lift four matching buttons or tokens once and set it on the clean side of the arrangement, leaving the named residue behind.
- Mist the towel rather than the ritual objects and wipe the working surface in one direction. Say “What is spent leaves; what is clear remains,” then assign home, work, body, and attention to the corners; reinforce only the weakest.
- Gather the tokens clockwise and store them together. Open a window if practical and clean one small part of the space.
