THE GRIMOIRE / CLEANSING

The silver bowl clearing

A silver bowl working with the difference between an honest reflection and a rehearsed self-image to clear a stale atmosphere and mark a deliberate fresh beginning.

Meaning and practice

The silver bowl form approaches clear a stale atmosphere and mark a deliberate fresh beginning through the difference between an honest reflection and a rehearsed self-image. The empty bowl reflects only fragments, making incompleteness part of the reading. That symbolism gives the rite its limit: the object can expose a decision, but only the following action can carry it into life.

Name the fact you have edited out of your own account and give it one unqualified sentence. That demand is what distinguishes this silver bowl rite from another clearing: its conclusion depends on the specific problem carried by a small reflective bowl, not on a generic promise of change.

The source records historical uses and meanings of objects in the same family as a small reflective bowl. The empty bowl reflects only fragments, making incompleteness part of the reading. This working applies that documented motif to clear a stale atmosphere and mark a deliberate fresh beginning; its wording and sequence are original to Okkult.

What you’ll need

  • A small reflective bowl
  • Enough clean water to cover the base of the bowl
  • A white hand towel
  • A narrow paper strip and waterproof pen
  • A box for donations or disposal
  • A removable label

The ritual

  1. Wash and dry the bowl, then set it on the folded towel where reflected light is visible but not dazzling. Arrange the workspace specifically for this clearing, removing anything that will not be used.
  2. Record what you are clearing and what you want the space to hold instead on the tag, card, label, or paper provided. Choose one real object tied to what you are clearing and what you want the space to hold instead that can responsibly leave the room today. Keep this question visible while you work: “What becomes visible when you stop arranging the answer for an audience?”
  3. Place the folded intention in the bowl and turn the bowl once clockwise. Lift a small reflective bowl once and set it on the clean side of the arrangement, leaving the named residue behind.
  4. Label the box with the replacement you want the cleared space to hold. Say “What is spent leaves; what is clear remains,” place the chosen object inside, and name the fact you have edited out of your own account and give it one unqualified sentence.
  5. Remove the paper, wipe the bowl clean, and return it to ordinary use. Open a window if practical and clean one small part of the space.
