THE GRIMOIRE / LUCK

The rosemary gate fortune

A rosemary gate working with permission, refusal, and the gate between them to open your attention to useful opportunities and timely choices.

Meaning and practice

The central tension is permission, refusal, and the gate between them. Rosemary marks an arch that can welcome, bar, or redirect rather than merely stand open. For this reason, the rite does not end with the spoken charge. Its result is measured by whether you can answer “What deserves passage, and what have you admitted only from habit?” with a concrete choice.

Write one welcome and one refusal on opposite sides of the paper. That demand is what distinguishes this rosemary gate rite from another fortune: its conclusion depends on the specific problem carried by a rosemary sprig, not on a generic promise of change.

The Folk-lore of Plants

T. F. Thiselton-Dyer · 1889

The source records historical uses and meanings of objects in the same family as a rosemary sprig. Rosemary marks an arch that can welcome, bar, or redirect rather than merely stand open. This working applies that documented motif to open your attention to useful opportunities and timely choices; its wording and sequence are original to Okkult.

What you’ll need

  • A rosemary sprig
  • A drinking glass half-filled with water
  • Two small cards and pencil
  • A pocket-sized calendar
  • A green paper clip

The ritual

  1. Rinse the rosemary, pat it dry, and trim no more than is needed to make a single flexible sprig. Stand it in water until the cards are ready. Arrange the workspace specifically for this fortune, removing anything that will not be used.
  2. Record the opportunity you hope to recognize and how you will respond on the tag, card, label, or paper provided. Choose a seven-day window in which you can respond to the opportunity you hope to recognize and how you will respond without forcing it. Keep this question visible while you work: “What deserves passage, and what have you admitted only from habit?”
  3. Trace a small arch over the paper with the rosemary, moving from left to right. Change the direction of a rosemary sprig without looking, then use its new orientation to choose where you will seek an opening.
  4. Clip the window’s first day, say “I notice the opening and meet it prepared,” and record one sign that would justify action. Write one welcome and one refusal on opposite sides of the paper.
  5. Place the rosemary in water for one night, then compost it. Carry the token for a day and act when a suitable opportunity appears.
