THE GRIMOIRE / LUCK

The seven knot fortune

A seven knot working with a matter with seven separate conditions to open your attention to useful opportunities and timely choices.

Meaning and practice

Fortune favors attention as much as chance. Decide in advance what a useful opening would look like, what risks you will avoid, and which prepared action will let you answer it. Here, the distinctive work belongs to a length of cotton cord. Each knot gives one condition a body, so pressure can be tested one strand at a time. Its meaning becomes useful only when the question is answered directly: “Which condition keeps the whole matter tied in place?”

Assign a condition to every knot and decide which one can be loosened first. That demand is what distinguishes this seven knot rite from another fortune: its conclusion depends on the specific problem carried by a length of cotton cord, not on a generic promise of change.

Sources behind this working

The Golden Bough: A Study of Magic and Religion

James George Frazer · 1922 abridged edition

The source records historical uses and meanings of objects in the same family as a length of cotton cord. Each knot gives one condition a body, so pressure can be tested one strand at a time. This working applies that documented motif to open your attention to useful opportunities and timely choices; its wording and sequence are original to Okkult.

What you’ll need

  • A length of cotton cord
  • Blunt household scissors
  • Seven small paper labels
  • A tray or folded cloth
  • A coin suitable for tossing
  • A folded cloth

The ritual

  1. Cut a forearm-length cord and arrange seven labels in a row on the tray. Give every label one short condition before touching the cord. Arrange the workspace specifically for this fortune, removing anything that will not be used.
  2. Record the opportunity you hope to recognize and how you will respond on the tag, card, label, or paper provided. Give the coin’s sides two actions, not yes and no. Both actions must be safe and useful. Keep this question visible while you work: “Which condition keeps the whole matter tied in place?”
  3. Tie seven loose knots in the cord, pausing at each knot to repeat the intention. Change the direction of a length of cotton cord without looking, then use its new orientation to choose where you will seek an opening.
  4. Toss the coin onto the cloth once, say “I notice the opening and meet it prepared,” and carry out the indicated experiment. Assign a condition to every knot and decide which one can be loosened first.
  5. After the fourth knot, stop and test whether the remaining three conditions still belong in the working. Keep the pause within this fortune by repeating once: “I notice the opening and meet it prepared”
  6. Keep the cord in a drawer for seven days, then untie it slowly and reuse or compost it. Carry the token for a day and act when a suitable opportunity appears.
