THE GRIMOIRE / LUCK

The window lantern fortune

A window lantern working with watching, being watched, and the lure of public display to open your attention to useful opportunities and timely choices.

Meaning and practice

Fortune favors attention as much as chance. Decide in advance what a useful opening would look like, what risks you will avoid, and which prepared action will let you answer it. Here, the distinctive work belongs to a battery-powered tea light. A window light sits between private chamber and public view. Its meaning becomes useful only when the question is answered directly: “Would the intention survive without witnesses?”

Decide what belongs on display, what belongs in confidence, and why. That demand is what distinguishes this window lantern rite from another fortune: its conclusion depends on the specific problem carried by a battery-powered tea light, not on a generic promise of change.

Domestic Folk-lore

T. F. Thiselton-Dyer · 1881

The source records historical uses and meanings of objects in the same family as a battery-powered tea light. A window light sits between private chamber and public view. This working applies that documented motif to open your attention to useful opportunities and timely choices; its wording and sequence are original to Okkult.

What you’ll need

  • A battery-powered tea light
  • A small mirror tile
  • A card and pencil
  • A ten-minute timer
  • A coin suitable for tossing
  • A folded cloth

The ritual

  1. Test the battery light, clean the window ledge, and angle the mirror so it reflects inward rather than toward neighboring windows. Arrange the workspace specifically for this fortune, removing anything that will not be used.
  2. Record the opportunity you hope to recognize and how you will respond on the tag, card, label, or paper provided. Give the coin’s sides two actions, not yes and no. Both actions must be safe and useful. Keep this question visible while you work: “Would the intention survive without witnesses?”
  3. Set the tea light beside the intention near a window and switch it on. Change the direction of a battery-powered tea light without looking, then use its new orientation to choose where you will seek an opening.
  4. Toss the coin onto the cloth once, say “I notice the opening and meet it prepared,” and carry out the indicated experiment. Decide what belongs on display, what belongs in confidence, and why.
  5. Switch off the light after ten minutes and store it for the next working. Carry the token for a day and act when a suitable opportunity appears.
