The pine needle dismissal

A pine needle working with direction sharpened to a single point to remove an unwanted influence from your own space, habits, or attention.

Meaning and practice

This dismissal is organized around direction sharpened to a single point. The pine needle turns a broad wish into a line between origin and action. The pine needle action therefore asks for judgment, not passive belief: “What does your attention pierce first when distractions fall away?”

Draw that line and place one dated task at its far end. That demand is what distinguishes this pine needle rite from another dismissal: its conclusion depends on the specific problem carried by a fallen pine needle or small pine sprig, not on a generic promise of change.

The Folk-lore of Plants

T. F. Thiselton-Dyer · 1889

The source records historical uses and meanings of objects in the same family as a fallen pine needle or small pine sprig. The pine needle turns a broad wish into a line between origin and action. This working applies that documented motif to remove an unwanted influence from your own space, habits, or attention; its wording and sequence are original to Okkult.

What you’ll need

  • A fallen pine needle or small pine sprig
  • A square of brown paper
  • A soft pencil
  • A hand broom
  • A dustpan

The ritual

  1. Use a fallen pine sprig that is dry and free of sap. Fold the brown paper once to create a clear center line. Arrange the workspace specifically for this dismissal, removing anything that will not be used.
  2. Record the influence you are dismissing and what will occupy its place on the tag, card, label, or paper provided. Put the unwanted influence in one sentence and place the card at the far edge of the work surface. Keep this question visible while you work: “What does your attention pierce first when distractions fall away?”
  3. Point the pine needle toward the first line of the intention, then toward the final action. Move a fallen pine needle or small pine sprig one deliberate step toward the exit and leave its former position empty.
  4. Sweep the card into the dustpan without sweeping ritual objects, say “Your place is elsewhere; this space returns to me,” and draw that line and place one dated task at its far end.
  5. Place the pine material outside and wash your hands. Move the written influence toward an exit, recycle it, and change one habit that invited its return.
