THE GRIMOIRE / BANISHING

The sea shell dismissal

A sea shell working with appetite, listening, and words shaped by a chamber to remove an unwanted influence from your own space, habits, or attention.

Meaning and practice

A dismissal creates a vacancy. Choose what will replace the removed habit, object, contact, or pattern, and close the route by which it previously returned. Here, the distinctive work belongs to a clean empty seashell. A shell returns the voice altered, exposing desire through resonance rather than argument. Its meaning becomes useful only when the question is answered directly: “What hunger grows louder when you hear yourself admit it?”

Speak the want once, then write what satisfying it would actually require. That demand is what distinguishes this sea shell rite from another dismissal: its conclusion depends on the specific problem carried by a clean empty seashell, not on a generic promise of change.

Sources behind this working

The Book of Talismans, Amulets and Zodiacal Gems

William Thomas and Kate Pavitt · 1922

The source records historical uses and meanings of objects in the same family as a clean empty seashell. A shell returns the voice altered, exposing desire through resonance rather than argument. This working applies that documented motif to remove an unwanted influence from your own space, habits, or attention; its wording and sequence are original to Okkult.

What you’ll need

  • A clean empty seashell
  • A bowl of fresh water
  • A cotton cloth
  • A narrow card and pencil
  • A bowl of clean water
  • A pouring jug

The ritual

  1. Rinse loose sand from the empty shell and inspect the rim for sharp chips. Dry it with the opening facing down. Arrange the workspace specifically for this dismissal, removing anything that will not be used.
  2. Record the influence you are dismissing and what will occupy its place on the tag, card, label, or paper provided. Name what is leaving and the habit that previously let it return. Keep this question visible while you work: “What hunger grows louder when you hear yourself admit it?”
  3. Read the intention softly toward the shell opening, then turn the opening toward the room. Move a clean empty seashell one deliberate step toward the exit and leave its former position empty.
  4. Pour water slowly from bowl to jug while saying “Your place is elsewhere; this space returns to me.” Stop when the bowl is empty and speak the want once, then write what satisfying it would actually require.
  5. Rinse the shell and keep it on a shelf or return it to a suitable natural place. Move the written influence toward an exit, recycle it, and change one habit that invited its return.
